18th Reading Sharing Meeting
‘I heard that you can hear the sound of the sea by holding a conch near your ear, which seems to say, ‘The mountain is desolate, featured in rectangular plane coordinate system.’ On the evening of March 16th, teacher Wang Xing held up a conch in the lecture hall of the west campus, which successfully attracted the attention of all the teachers. Today, he brought everyone an interesting ‘history book’ of mathematics -- ‘Everything is Number’.
To be specific, ‘Everything Is Number’ is the masterpiece of French writer Mikael Lonay. The book takes people back to prehistoric times, the four ancient civilizations, the European Middle Ages and the Renaissance to explore the history of mathematics. In addition, the author skillfully uses historical methods to construct numerous historical and contemporary scenes, beautifying mathematics into beautiful words.
Furthermore, Wang Xing introduced the origin of numbers, the evolution of mathematics and the relationship between mathematics and our life in a humorous way. Therefore, through his introduction, we all had a deeper understanding of mathematics. Evidently, from counting, trading, field surveying and road mapping in daily life to exploring the universe and observing planets, mathematics plays an irreplaceable role.
To put it in a nutshell, Einstein once said, ‘The most incomprehensible thing about the universe is that it is comprehensible at all.’ And mathematics is how we understand the universe. What’s more, mathematics appears in every corner of our life, which should not be boring symbols in textbooks. Behind every simple number, there is the ever-changing beauty of mathematics!
